New Jersey Cannabis Extraction Workers Vote to Unionize with UFCW Local 360

New Jersey Cannabis Extraction Workers Vote to Unionize

Workers at Sun Extractions in Hamilton, New Jersey, have voted to join United Food and Commercial Workers (UFCW) Local 360, marking a development in cannabis worker unionization efforts within the state’s regulated industry. The 12 employees at the extraction facility are now negotiating a union contract, as reported by Ganjapreneur. This action aligns with a national trend of labor organizing in the cannabis sector, building on earlier coverage of federal labor decisions and state laws affecting cannabis worker unionization.

UFCW’s “Cannabis Workers Rising” Campaign Expands

The vote at Sun Extractions is part of the UFCW’s ongoing “Cannabis Workers Rising” campaign, which aims to organize employees across the cannabis industry. Hugh Giordano, UFCW Local 360 Director of Organizing, stated that the workers’ decision contributes to making New Jersey’s cannabis industry “stronger.” He emphasized that “Sustainable success for businesses, employees, and communities starts with fair treatment, strong standards, and shared commitments. That’s how jobs in the cannabis industry become long-term careers, and it’s the future these employees are working toward,” according to a statement cited by Ganjapreneur.

Since 2020, the campaign has recorded 418 organizing wins across 20 U.S. states. These wins include 290 dispensaries and 36 cultivation facilities, demonstrating a broad effort to establish labor representation within the sector. Sam Ferraino, UFCW Local 350 President, commented that the Sun Extraction workers’ vote serves as “another proof point” that “stronger unions mean stronger industries and stronger communities,” as per the Ganjapreneur report.

Regulatory Context for Labor Relations in New Jersey

New Jersey’s adult-use cannabis legislation includes specific provisions that influence labor relations within the industry. Licensees are required to sign Labor Peace Agreements as a condition for obtaining licensure.

This regulatory framework provides a pathway for unionization efforts, such as those seen at Sun Extractions, by establishing a pre-condition for market participation. The requirement aims to ensure stable labor relations within the nascent industry, influencing operational planning for cannabis businesses.

Implications for Industry Operations

The negotiation of a union contract at Sun Extractions will define terms related to wages, benefits, working conditions, and dispute resolution for the employees. For cannabis operators, the presence of unionized workforces can introduce structured labor costs and operational guidelines. These factors are integrated into business planning and financial projections.

The ongoing expansion of cannabis worker unionization across various states suggests a developing standard for labor practices within the regulated cannabis sector, influencing human resources strategies and compliance considerations for companies operating in these markets.
