New Zealand Hemp Producer Rubisco Secures Multi-Million Dollar Māori Investment for Expansion

Rubisco, a New Zealand-based natural-fiber producer, has secured a strategic multi-million dollar investment from Te Rūnanga o Arowhenua Ltd., an investment group linked to a Māori tribal organization in New Zealand’s South Island. This significant partnership, reported by Hemp Today, is intended to support the expansion of Rubisco’s business in hemp- and wool-based materials. While the exact financial terms were not disclosed beyond a “multi-million dollars” description, the deal underscores growing confidence in the industrial hemp sector and its potential for high-value applications.

Strategic Capital for Industrial Hemp Expansion

The investment from Te Rūnanga o Arowhenua Ltd. is poised to facilitate Rubisco’s operational growth, particularly in its natural fiber processing capabilities. Rubisco CEO Guy Wills stated, “There is a clear global opportunity for natural materials, and this positions us to scale alongside the right partners.” This capital injection reflects increasing interest from institutional and indigenous investors in sustainable manufacturing and natural-materials supply chains.

Te Rūnanga o Arowhenua Ltd. manages investments and business activities for the Arowhenua tribal organization, which has diverse interests including farming, seafood, tourism, and commercial property. Jon Gurr, general manager at Te Rūnanga o Arowhenua Ltd., noted that the investment aligns with the organization’s long-term focus on “kaitiakitanga,” the Māori principle of environmental stewardship and responsible resource management. This principle emphasizes initiatives connecting land, resources, and innovation to deliver enduring outcomes for future generations.

Rubisco’s Operational Trajectory and New Zealand Hemp Investment

Rubisco, headquartered in Ashburton, has a history rooted in over 50 years of wool-processing operations in New Zealand. The company is backed by New Zealand agribusiness firm Carrfields and has established itself as a prominent hemp-processing enterprise within the country. As previously reported by Hemp Gazette, Rubisco has been expanding its operational footprint.

The company consolidated its hemp-fiber processing operations at its South Island site last year, a move aimed at streamlining logistics and scaling production for export markets. Rubisco has developed capabilities spanning fiber sourcing, processing, and yarn development, positioning itself to meet demand for industrial hemp-derived materials in various sectors.

New Zealand’s Industrial Hemp Sector Momentum

This New Zealand hemp investment highlights the country’s strategic effort to position industrial hemp as a high-value material. The sector is increasingly seen as integral to a transition toward performance-driven natural materials and low-carbon manufacturing. Key areas of focus for New Zealand’s hemp industry include:

  • Development of industrial materials for textiles and interiors.
  • Application in construction products and composites.
  • Emphasis on scalable processing infrastructure.
  • Establishment of regional manufacturing hubs.
  • Implementation of traceable supply chains to ensure material integrity.

New Zealand stakeholders are actively working to align the country’s hemp sector with emerging material performance standards.
