Kentucky’s First Medical Cannabis Dispensary Closes Temporarily

The first (and currently only) dispensary to offer legal medical cannabis in the US state of Kentucky has been forced into hiatus after running out of product.

The Post Dispensary in Beaver Dam —  a small community situated in Ohio County at the junction of U.S. Routes 62 and 231 – opened on December 13; and being the first there was never any doubt it would be well-attended.

Less than 10 days on and The Post has had to close its doors temporarily as it has run out of product. According to a message posted on its website, it will re-open January 2026 (exact date unknown). The dispensary’s menu is currently only showing non-medicinal merchandise and a single vaporiser model.

When fully stocked, the Post Dispensary offers a selection of flower (for vaporization – smoking cannabis is not permitted under the state’s program), concentrates, edibles, vapes; serving surrounding communities such as Hartford, McHenry, Centertown and Windy Hill as well as Beaver Dam.

Kentucky legalized medical marijuana at the beginning of this year. All cannabis sold in the state is required to be grown, tested, and processed within Kentucky’s borders. Cultivation of the first legal medical cannabis plants in the state began in July.

The state has issued approximately 48 dispensary licenses statewide (one per region, with additional licenses for Lexington and Louisville), but most have not announced opening dates as yet.

Further dispensary openings will roll out gradually into 2026 as supply grows and facilities complete inspections and compliance requirements.

There will be plenty of demand: nearly 15,000 Kentuckians currently hold medical marijuana cards.

It’s been a long road to this point, with the journey driven by Governor Andy Beshear who was growing increasingly frustrated by the lack of progress from lawmakers.

The governor signed Senate Bill 47 into law way back in 2023, legalizing medical cannabis for Kentuckians from the beginning of this year. Prior to that, Governor Beshear signed an executive order in 2022 that enabled residents with certain medical conditions to possess and use small amounts of medical cannabis from January 2023.

The Kentucky Office of Medical Cannabis began accepting applications from businesses in July 2024, and the first licence was granted in September that year The state’s first medical cannabis ID cards were issued to patients in February this year – one of those going to a doctor.
